One thing I definitely AM ready for though, is baby girl accessories. Because we all know that's the most important thing for a baby girl to have, right? ;) The other day I went over to Kara's house (she was my roommate my first two semesters of college!) and she hooked me up with all sorts of good stuff like blankets and burp cloths. And we made headbands and bows, and we're going to make more this week. She taught me how to make the bows, and I've had a couple requests for a tutorial so here you go! It seriously is super easy, and is all hand-sewn. Once you get the hang of it, it takes just a couple minutes per bow.
Materials:
-Two rectangular pieces
-Scissors
-Needle and Thread
(The main rectangular piece can be longer, or more square like mine, depending on how you want your final bow to look)
1. Using the larger piece, you're going to fold the rectangle in thirds, with the edges slightly overlapping.
2. Next you're going to fold it in thirds again, only the other...direction? And again you want the two edges, when folded in, to slightly overlap. The back of the bow is the side where the edges overlap. Flip it over to the front to get ready for the next step.
3. Get your needle ready to sew! Insert your needle from the top, then bring it back up to create a little "bump". Insert your needle again and this time make your bump a little longer/bigger.
This step is getting the shape of your bow how you want it. For mine, as you can see, I made three bumps (I try to make the first and last bump the same size, with the middle bump a little bigger). You can also make yours with only two, which makes the bow look a little more boyish (my opinion).
Once you have your bumps the way you like them, pull the needle all the way through and tighten it so you can get a good idea of how it'll look! (You can still wiggle it around to change the shape)
4. Wrap the thread around the center a good few times, so you have a nice, tight band. Don't tie off the thread yet, we're not finished!
5. Now you're going to need the other rectangular piece. Fold it in thirds, just like with the main piece. Put your bow upside down with the thin, rectangular piece underneath it. Cut off extra length from your strip (you want enough room to be able to fold over that open edge, and overlap the two edges a little bit).
6. As you can see in the picture, the folded edge just gives it a "cleaner" look, and makes it easier to sew. Insert your needle from the bottom and bring it up through the folded edge you made. Then just keep sewing till you get to the end, and tie it off! Make sure, as you sew, that you only sew through the strip and aren't attaching it to the actual bow. That way you can insert an alligator clip to attach it onto a headband, put it in your hair, or whatever you want to do with it.
